Braids That Can Withstand a Hurricane

Contributing Style Editor Lori Bergamotto and I have been dying to go to John Barrett Salon’s braid bar (conveniently located on the top floor of Bergdorf Goodman) since it opened in June. We finally made an appointment for this past Thursday, and when we arrived we paged through a detailed braid lookbook to choose our styles—Lori opted for the Sienna, I the Drew (duh). 40-some bobby pins later, we were transformed. Of course we were ecstatic afterward, but Lori and I are far from the most enthusiastic braid bar patrons—they’ve braided about 500 heads in the past three weeks and some of them even have clients who come in once a week. It’s officially the new blowout. After hearing how sturdy the braids were, I challenged Lori to a braid-off to see who could keep the style in the longest (honestly, I was just looking forward to not washing and blow drying my hair for a few days). The results—tabulated over a hurricane weekend:
Maura—52 hours: 1 Exhale Corefusion class, one night in a beer garden, 10 hours of watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the couch
Lori—53 hours: 4 loads of laundry, 1 super sweaty SoulCycle class, a 24 hour bender of watching Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights.
I can’t believe she beat me by an hour!!!
