Paris Fashion Week Spring 2012: Balenciaga Breaks Some Benches
Cristobal Balenciaga was the master of couture. The Spaniard founded the house of Balenciaga in 1937, and since Nicolas Ghesquiere took the reigns in 1997 at the tender age of 25, its success has been like a rocket shot out of a cannon. This season Ghesquiere went into the archives and the results are near works of art. Any show that has editors standing in their platform heels for an hour (due to some faulty benches) must really be worth it. And it was.
The shapes were exaggerated—looks featured oversized jackets in rich colors and teeny-tiny shorts (we expect to see them on the likes of Anna Dello Russo and Alexa Chung). Handbags were carried grasped in the models’ hands and he sent girls out in visors that offer the ultimate in sun protection. While in pictures the looks seem eccentric, we have no doubt that once we see them in person we'll be smitten with what is sure to be premium craftsmanship and design.
