Amazing Advice from My Favorite Hair Guru

It’s not often someone quotes Gandhi to me at a splashy evening beauty event, but we’re talking about veteran colorist/salon owner James Corbett here, possibly one of the most giving human beings in the industry.
“It’s my favorite quote,” he said to me over the thumping bass and canapés. “'Be the change you want to see in the world.’ And this is how, in a small way, I can change the experience of cancer.”
And little by little, he’s doing just that. Hair2Help, the nonprofit Corbett started last year, pampers women with cancer: A day of organic, non-toxic treatments for hair, face and body, performed by specially trained technicians.
The spa days help not just the women, but the people who look after them: “When I ask what I can do to help, so many of them say that no one’s taking care of their caregivers.”
Corbett’s dream is to host Hair2Help bi-monthly nationwide, in partnership with the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodges, which offer free, temporary accommodation for those undergoing treatment outside their hometowns. (Corbett describes it as “The Ronald McDonald House for adults—it’s incredible.”) And Corbett’s vision gets bigger: He also wants to provide training for beauty professionals so that they know exactly how to work with—and benefit—cancer patients.
For that, he needs funding. If you’d like to help—I am!—donate whatever you can at www.hair2help.org.
