Coach Spring 2012: Into the Archives

Yesterday afternoon, the majority of Lucky's team headed over to Coach's carriage house archives on Manhattan's West Side. We went with the intention of previewing the label's Spring 2012 accessories collection which, with its mix of classic woven-leather totes and colorful snakeskin-embossed clutches, was quintessentially Coach in every way. A smattering of Crayola-hued watches, some with transparent jelly-type straps, caught our eye as well—and at around $150 a pop, they'll make for fun gifts.

But the climax of our visit was something completely different. While scoping out next season's offerings, we were afforded a glimpse into the storied brand's history. Rows upon rows of satchels, trunks and multicolored coin pouches sat protected behind walls of glass around the entire warehouse—many of them artifacts from Bonnie Cashin's reign during the 1960s. I fell in love with a cross-body bag that closed with an elaborate golden clasp—one I've never spotted on a modern carryall—while John Jannuzzi eyed a pile of black-and-white patterned luggage. Meanwhile, Lauren Sherman flipped for some pint-sized lady bags in colorful shagreen (pictured below). Talk about a chic history lesson!
