The argyle pattern, which is comprised of diamonds in a checkerboard arrangement, originated in 17th century Scotland. It's always been somewhat of a preppy standard, but we're touting it as this winter's fair isle (a print that won the mainstream's attention in the coldest days of 2010). We're still into that other pattern, but we suggest updating your sweater collection with a few of these argyle pieces. That is, if you can manage to get that image of dorky golf socks out of your head.
