Best Jeans For Your Body Type

There's nothing we love owning—and hate buying—more than jeans, the closet staple that seems to complement everything except our physique.

So we've corraled a few guidelines to finding the cut, wash and fabric best tailored to different body challenges. Below, our tips to take the blues out of finding well-fitting blues:

If You Want To: Minimize your midsection

Look For: Stiff, not stretchy, denim. These 99% cotton classics won't cling or create the dreaded "muffin top" that more elastic denim does.

Avoid: Falling into the "these jeans are like Spanx!" trap. The higher the cotton content, the better.

If You Want To: Minimize your midsection

Look For: Mid-waisted jeans. While it sounds counterintuitive, they'll draw attention up towards your natural waist instead of your hips and rise high enough to cover a large butt.

Avoid: Bold buttons or embellishments at the front pockets.

If You Want To: Thin out your thighs

Look For: Flares that'll counterbalance your prorportions and draw the eye down.

Avoid: Bleached or faded patches at the thighs, which will make them look larger.

If You Want To: Thin out your thighs

Look For: Skinny jeans. Really! Just make sure they're either a dark wash or darker up top than on bottom, like these ombré ones.

Avoid: Jeans that are lighter on top than on bottom, or have whiskering details up top.

If You Want To: Create some curves

Look For: Denim with zippers, whiskering or other details at the hips and upper thighs, which will draw eyes outward and round you out.

Avoid: Boyfriend cuts.

If You Want To: Create some curves

Look For: Detailed back pockets, which give a flat butt a little dimension.

Avoid: Back pockets that are too large, which overwhelm a smaller butt.

If You Want To: Lengthen your legs

Look For: Jeans that almost graze the floor, but don't.

Avoid: Unruly, too-long hems drown a smaller silhouette, but cuffed or scrunched-up stovepipes emphasize shorter legs. Instead, aim for the Goldilocks sweet spot in the middle.
