Community Collection: Giving Back, Beautifully

There's no doubt that scoring a new bag or amazing pair of boots can brighten your entire day. Now, charitable e-commerce site Community Collection is working to make online shopping a feel-good experience on a far deeper level.

Launched just last month, the company links both established and emerging fashion labels with top philanthropic causes. Featured designers create a special run of limited-edition pieces exclusively for Community Collection to sell online and 20 percent of those proceeds go straight to their charity of choice.

However, it doesn't end there. Once the donation dollars are received, Community Collection works closely as each initiative funds their respective projects, then reports the progress back to the shoppers that helped it all happen. Thanks to this transparent approach, consumers can watch as their purchases make a positive impact—on more than just their wardrobes.

"We really try to buy the collections that we love, from designers shoppers know and trust," explains Megan Johnson, Community Collection's Director of Merchandising. "My favorite part of the project has been seeing the incredible reactions from those designers. Their excitement, combined with the charities' excitement, makes buying for the site different in the most wonderful way." Current featured labels range from Genetic Denim and Diane von Furstenberg to Equipment and Helmut Lang, each of which has been paired with organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, the American Cancer Society, or Operation Smile. And judging by the wealth of pieces I saw during a recent visit to preview Community Collection's spring 2012 goods, there's a lot more to come next season. Check out some of our favorite pieces below—buying 'em will do you (and the world at large) a lot of good!
