Fashion Chat: 10 Questions with Jessie Randall of Loeffler Randall

Jessie models her resort designs.

To celebrate today's arrival of Loeffler Randall's amazing, seaside-minded Resort 2012 collection—shoppable now at LoefflerRandall.com—I asked the label's designer a few questions about life, celebrities and the pursuit of wearable footwear. (And check out the collection in question on the feet of the woman who made it all happen!)

For those who might not know, how did you first break into the fashion business? Has design—and accessory design in particular—always been an interest of yours?

I actually met my husband while working in advertising and he encouraged me to go back to school for design. I quit my advertising job, took fashion classes and immediately started interning and working in the industry.

How would you describe the Loeffler Randall aesthetic in a single sentence?

Downtown feminine—or downtown elegance.

Tell me a bit about your inspiration for resort.

The inspiration for resort 2012 was a kind of deconstruction of nautical elements. We were interested in the ropey feeling of espadrilles and the graphic quality of stripes, which translated into clean straps across the foot.

How would you say designing shoes differs from creating clothing?

You have more constraint with shoes because you are working with lasts [or a solid form around which a shoe is molded], which are expensive and have limitations. For example, you can't use the same last for open- and closed-toe shoes. With clothes, anything goes. But I like the constraints of shoe design! They keep me focused and lead me to interesting places.

What's your personal favorite style from your resort collection? You can only pick one!

I wear the Nadia bootie in black practically every day. So versatile!

What are three basic shoes every girl should own?

I don't really believe in fashion rules, because everyone is different and likes different things. But for me, I'd want a chic pair of boots that transition easily from day to a night out with friends, one really sexy pair of heels that are super-special and one pair that's flat and easy to wear with everything in my closet.

Which celeb would you most like to see in a pair of Loeffler Randalls?

I think Sofia Coppola would be amazing—she has such beautiful taste.

What is your favorite aspect of your job? And your least favorite?

My favorite is getting to create shoes for my own closet! Least favorite is attending fit sessions.

How many pairs of shoes are in your own closet? A ballpark estimate is fine...

I own a ton—I have no idea how many in total. More than is necessary, that's for sure!

Imagine, if you will, that you could either only wear heels OR only flats for the rest of your life. Which would you pick?

Definitely flats. Did I mention I am the mom of three small boys?!
