Mindy Kaling Loves Manicures and '90s R&B
Last night, we joined the awesome Mindy Kaling (best known for her starring/directorial/production role on NBC's The Office) to fête her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? at Tory Burch's Madison Avenue boutique.
In between sampling mini shrimp tacos and flipping through the racks of tweed jackets and cashmere dresses, we asked the glam comedienne how her friendship with Tory came about. Turns out that although Mindy's been crazy for the designer's preppy classics for years, the pair actually met via Twitter, striking up a fun back-and-forth exchange. "I'm so moved by the fact that she wanted to host this party!" the actress exclaimed. "Not only was she the one who originally suggested it, but she was like, 'Invite all your friends, we'll get catering and we're just gonna dance and drink!' If you're a baller--a mogul, like Tory—and you still care about celebrating other women, that's a pretty special thing."
And dance we did—to the sounds of DJ Samantha Ronson, no less, who whipped up a special mix CD just for the occasion. Among the playlist's notable tracks? Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody?" and Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything." Seems Mindy's got a thing for late-'90s hits...and statement-making nail art, as it happens. Of her glittering gold mani (pictured below), she told us, "This was my compromise for a 'neutral nail' for my press tour!"
