Art, Schmart: The Shopping During Miami Basel Season Is Killer
Of course there’s nothing more fun than looking at art and party hopping in warm weather. (Which is a big reason I'm in Miami for Art Basel this weekend.) But I managed to find something. Funny enough, it’s a favorite pastime. Not to mention my job: SHOPPING!
First stop was an in-store/in-parking garage (no drinks allowed in the store!) party at Alchemist, hosted by Erin Wasson. Who, by the way, is the hottest girl I’ve ever seen. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to see her in person as opposed to on a Maybelline billboard, she’s so sexy that it’s almost too much to take. And so is the selection at Alchemist. While I can’t quite see how Miami girls are investing in Rick Owens leather/fur combo jackets—they sure were fun to try on. The store also carries Chrome Hearts, Givenchy, Celine and Balenciaga. And if this party isn't chic enough for you, we waited for the elevator with Joseph Altuzarra.
But my favorite store in Miami, hands down, is The Webster. This place puts the average department store to shame. Instead of being merchandised by brand, each rack is its own ball of surprises, like a Givenchy purple floral print alongside a bright yellow Chanel tweed suit. An odd strategy that I found delightful. Holding down the center of the room was a Givenchy shearling motorcycle jacket that I can’t imagine how I’ll live without, so I made my friend buy it so I can borrow it from her. (Note: This is a very good way to be in close proximity to items not within your 2012 shopping budget). A print Proenza Schouler peplum jacket. The red plastic-like Jimmy Choo evening bag. An Alaia cropped lace shell with a tiny collar—adorable. Basically, if you’re looking for the best runway pieces from this season—they’re all packed into this store. I’ve never been more excited. I was SO excited that I had to take a rest on the couches in the shoe department (I call it the dude area, where dudes sit and wait for their girls to try on clothes, once in awhile looking up from their blackberries to mumble “looks great, honey.” )
Also happening in this particular dude area: mojitos from the bar downstairs. Runway favorites, mojitos and dudes. It’s a trifecta.
Tonight there’ll be more parties, tomorrow there will be more art. But I kind of want to go shopping again. If I’m being honest.
