Best of the Month Clubs
From beauty products to beer, new "of the month" clubs are popping up on a daily basis. But which of these gifts that keep on giving are best?
Birchbox
What You Pay: $10 per month ($120 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: Four or five sample size beauty products per month (including minis from Stila, Kiehl's, Kérastase).
The Pros: Exposure to some pretty fabulous products you might not normally have tried.
The Cons: While you can set preferences and guidelines, you can't specifically pick a product. Which means no gunning for eight samples of NARS Orgasm blush instead of buying it for real.
Craft Coffee Tasting Boxes
What You Pay: $19.95 per month ($234.90 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: Three different packages of coffee per month, chosen from high-end roasters like Irving Farm and Mad Cap Coffee Company.
The Pros: Most coffees sampled are fair trade.
The Cons: You can't cancel a 6 or 12-month package before it ends. But really, when does morning coffee go unwanted?
For the Makers
What You Pay: $29 per month (or $348 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: Supplies for four jewelry & accessory D.I.Y. projects each month, each with detailed instructions and cute illustrations.
The Pros: Not loving a delivery isn't a total bummer since you can easily recycle those supplies for another project down the road.
The Cons: Gift orders are non-refundable and can't be cancelled.
Bacon Freak "Bacon Is Meat Candy" Club
What You Pay: $475.95 per year (or $39.66 per month)
What You Get: Two packages of different flavored bacon (ranging from jalapeno to apple cinnamon) each month; a recipe book (chocolate covered bacon?); a t-shirt with "Bacon Is Meat Candy" emblazoned across it.
The Pros: That t-shirt!
The Cons: Cholesterol.
Jewelmint
What You Pay: $29.95 per month (or $359.40 per year).
What You Get: Access to a selection of jewelry picked by Kate Bosworth and her stylist Cher Coulter. Beyond that, any piece you buy is $29.95, too.
The Pros: The monthly fee is skippable if you don't want to buy something that month.
The Cons: You have to designate that you're skipping the month by a certain date or your card will be charged anyway. Hello, Siri.
J. Crew Cashmere of the Month Club
What You Pay: $1,875 per year (or $156.25 per month).
What You Get: A cashmere knit per month, in a range of colors and cuts.
The Pros: The yearly fee may be hefty, but it's still way less than what you'd pay for 12 cashmere pieces—even at J.Crew's reasonable prices.
The Cons: Those summer shipments might not be as welcome when it's warm out.
Zagat Wine Club
What You Pay: $46.66 per month ($559.96 per year). Shipping not included.
What You Get: A selection of 12 wines delivered every three months.
The Pros: The freedom to change your red/white preference any time—or order a mix.
The Cons: The not-included shipping and taxes, steeper for alcohol than most other products.
Shoemint
What You Pay: $29.99 per month ($359.88 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: Access to shoes designed by Rachel Bilson, Steve Madden and stylist Nicole Chavez, which are just $79.98 per pair with membership.
The Pros: Like Jewelmint, you can skip a monthly payment if you don't want to purchase anything that month.
The Cons: You have to designate that you're skipping the month, or your card will be automatically charged. Also, more reason to believe Shoe Addiction is a real thing.
In The Mood Intimates 12-Month Bra and Panty Set
What You Pay: $90 per month (or $1,080 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: A bra and panty set per month, picked from lines including Elle Macpherson Intimates and Cosabella.
The Pros: A little variety in your underwear drawer—always a good thing.
The Cons: Random sampling means you might get a lacy number when you really want a seamless t-shirt bra.
HomeMint
What You Pay: $9.99 per month (or $119.88 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: Serious discounts towards the site's home goods items, as well as privileged access and other perks.
The Pros: No surprises: you choose which items you want to buy each month, even if it's none at all.
The Cons: No surprises. (Opening mail is fun.)
Beer of the Month Club
What You Pay: $22.95 per month ($275.40 per year). Shipping not included.
What You Get: A 12-pack per month that includes 4 different selections of microbrewed beers.
The Pros: Points with the boyfriend.
The Cons: Random samplings mean you can't just choose the pilsners you like so much.
Tota Press
What You Pay: $56 for a 6-month subscription (or $112 per year). Shipping not included.
What You Get: Two limited edition cards & envelopes sent to you each month
The Pros: Unlike with food or flowers, there's no need to rush home to pick up that package.
The Cons: Not enough variety in each monthly shipment, since you get only two variations of the same design.
Harry & David Light Size Fruit-of-the-Month Club
What You Pay: $19.99 per month (or $239.95 per year). Shipping not included.
What You Get: A selection of fruit including grapefruit, pears and cherries per month.
The Pros: Unlike most fruit of the month clubs, the "Light" version is sized for a smaller household. Which means you won't pay more for a giant bushel of fruit that'll just go bad before you can eat it.
The Cons: Each month delivers a single fruit, rather than a variety of fruits.
Invisible Exports
What You Pay: $200 per month (or $2,400 per year). Shipping included.
What You Get: Curator-selected pieces of art, complete with a certificate of authenticity
The Pros: The taste level's pretty high; formerly featured artist Jutta Koether is now in the Whitney Biennial.
The Cons: The 12-month minimum for each order. It's expensive.
Stylemint
What You Pay: $29.99 per month (or $359.88 per year).
What You Get: Access to t-shirts designed by the Olsen twins, which are just $29.99 with membership.
The Pros: Like sister sites Jewelmint and Shoemint, you can skip a month if you don't want any of the tees.
The Cons: Again, you have to designate you're opting out for the month or your card will be charged automatically. But it's still way less than what you'd pay for that $39,000 The Row backpack.
