Don't Miss Out: "Black Monday" Is Going to Be Huge Shopping Day

Despite Black Friday's sky-high sales this year, stores have experienced an inconsistent holiday shopping season. Traffic is down 1.8 percent from last December's numbers; most customers are holding out for bigger deals. However, experts predict a post-yuletide salvation: December 26 is poised to generate $29 billion in sales.

"Black Monday is going to be huge,” Craig Johnson, president of research firm Customer Growth Partners told WWD. "We think it’s being underestimated and that retailers will experience the best post-Christmas week ever."

Part of Boxing Day's appeal has to do with its place on the calendar this year. Since Christmas falls on a Sunday, most people have at least the following day—if not the entire week—off. Without the burden of present shopping and gift cards in their pockets, consumers will want to indulge. Plus, local returns will drive foot traffic, causing visitors to browse newly discounted items. Most markdowns, both in-stores and online, are reported to last through New Year's Eve. (We've collected some of the best ones coming up. Check them out here.)

So, after the last package is wrapped and final stocking is stuffed, pour yourself some mulled cider and make a second list. Because on December 26, the presents will all be for you.
