Snap Poll: Do You Still Shop at the Mall?
More specifically, Drexler worries that the mall ambience detracts from the vibe of his store. At a recent conference in New York, he “complained about one mall selling popcorn in a spot just below a J. Crew,” since the “pungent odor” was “too much for him to take,” reports WWD.
We get it—Piercing Pagodas, Panda Expresses and swarms of weekend crowds might not seem very upscale compared to J.Crew's luxe cashmere knits and cooler-than-thou "guest" brands (we're talking Barbour jackets, MiH jeans and Cutler and Gross's $400 sunglasses).
But as someone who has absolutely shopped in a mall within the past year (possibly while enjoying an Auntie Anne's pretzel), I'm not so sure their grab bag feeling subtracts from each store's atmosphere.
“I didn’t say ‘all’ malls,” Drexler backtracked after getting some flack from the rest of the forum (which included C. Wonder's Chris Burch and Gilt Groupe's Susan Lyne). But as for the malls Drexler does mean: is he being harsh, or just realistic? Do you still shop in malls for high end clothing? Or do you relegate them to food courts and more casual purchases?
