Best Colors for Your Skin Tone—Swimwear

The following is a guest post from out friends at The Budget Fashionista.

We acknowledge that after having read the title of this post, you may still be cringing. For most of us, the last thing we want to even begin thinking about right now is putting on a swimsuit.

Maybe you’re still beating a hasty retreat to the gym to work off the last of the holidays. Maybe your skin is so dry it’s flaking off. Or maybe it’s just so darn cold where you live that you have a challenging enough time trying to stay warm while changing out of your jammies in the morning.

No matter what the reason, we sympathize. So, consider this a wee seed that we’re offering for future reference. Read it, bookmark it, and read it again in a few months.

The Right Swimwear Color for Your Skin Tone

Deep breath, hold your nose, and jump!

If you have… light brown or blond hair with medium-light skin, go for deep reds and earth tones. Avoid suits in black or dark grey.

1. Ruby red bikini, $69.83 from ASOS

2. Green trimmed bikini, $62 from YOOX

If you have… medium-dark skin with dark brown or black hair, have fun with color! Bright yellows and jewel toned pinks and purples will look marvelous on you. Stay away from muted colors like beige or olive green.

1. Yellow bikini $44 from Victoria’s Secret

2. Magenta halter one-piece $69.99 from J.Crew

If you have… very light skin and/or freckles with light blond or red hair, cobalt blue, any shade of green (apart from lime) and, believe it or not you gingers out there, pink are some of your best swimsuit colors. It’s a good idea to avoid orange and yellow.

1. Paint splatter bikini $164 from Bloomingdale’s

2. Emerald retro two-piece $89.99 from Modcloth

If you have… dark skin and dark hair, pastels will look marvelous on you! Baby blues, minty greens, soft pinks and pale yellows as well as light grey will be your best choices when it comes to choosing swimwear. As for orange, white and brown, unless the suit is the most perfect fitting piece of lycra you’ve ever put on your body, leave it behind in search of most sorbet-oriented colors.

1. Dove grey bikini $22.94 each for top and bottom from Old Navy

2. Lisa Curran one-piece swimwear $48.59 from Bluefly

If you have… olive toned or light brown skin with medium brown or dark hair, then black works beautifully on you (lucky girl!) as does army green, tangerine and pale blues and taupes. Colors to avoid? Mustard, brown and grey.

1. Tiki Tile bikini, $87 from Quicksilver

2. Splendid halter one-piece $97 from Shopbop

If you have… creamy light skin with dark hair, your best bet will be any color in the blue family—navy, turquoise, baby blue as well as emerald, fuchsia and plum. It’s a good idea to leave the orange and white suits on the rack.

1. Navy one-piece $85 from Madewell

Turquoise ruched one-piece $78 from Roxy

There, that wasn’t so terrible, was it? While bathing suit shopping may be low on your Favorite Things To Do list, at least we can all agree on one thing: summer is an absolutely lovely time of year and if you have a swimsuit that makes you feel like a million bucks, the season will be that much more enjoyable. Five months and counting…
