Could Stuart Weitzman Be the Next Manolo Blahnik?
Recently, we've seen a lot of designers expand their businesses with mass market collaborations and lower-priced diffusion lines. Stuart Weitzman, however, has chosen to go in the other direction. This fall, he's launching SW1, a high-end offshoot of his contemporary accessories line.
According to WWD, the collection will include shoes ranging from $595 (for basic pumps) to $995 (a full boot) and handbags in three variations: muted pastels (pale yellow, soft rose and pinkish grey) exotics skins (jewel-colored python) and neutrals (basic black and brown). The latter category will feature a full selection of shapes—totes, clutches, minaudières, tablet cases and satchels—marked between $800 and $1,500. The pricier product will also be sold at a more exclusive group of stores. Selfridges in London and Holt Renfrew in Canada have ordered pieces for next season, but retail locations in the United States have not been confirmed.
If the designer's new project is successful, it could catapult him into the exalted ranks of footwear legends like Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin. If and when this happens, we don't want you to be without a Stuart Weitzman original. So, we've shared five of our favorite styles from the company's less costly main line—all available online now. Do you think Stuart Weitzman will succeed as a luxury shoe and handbag brand or do you think he should stick to the mid-range market?
