Herve Leger Fall 2012: Bandage Dresses Go Bondage

Before Hervé Léger’s fall show, we asked Lubov Azria what to expect. (She co-designs the line with her husband Max Azria, of BCBG.). “More corsetry than I think anyone has ever sent down the runway,” she replied quickly.

We didn’t count the exact number of corsets (20? 25?) but we’d have to think she’s right. Each season the Azrias spin Léger’s bodyconscious dresses in a new way; this season, they took the bandage dress in a bondage direction.

“We started with an equestrian theme,” Lubov explained. But paired with the slinky shilhouettes, fall’s “leather, harnesses and restraint” turned the dresses more Lara Croft: Tomb Raider than proper Englishman on a hunt. Simply put, they're a little badass. “It’s the most rock and roll collection we’ve ever done,” she said, then asserted, "but Hervé Léger is not just for evening, not just for cocktails.”

Instead, to temper the dresses’ sex appeal and make them a little more daytime friendly, Lubov suggested “throwing on a sweatshirt—cropped, oversize, whatever—and some flats." We could picture some of the printed, more full-skirted options with long cardigans, or the low-heeled sandals we love so much for spring. And maybe that casual, nonchalant way of wearing the dresses (like the printed one above, one of Lubov's favorites) would make them more rock and roll than anything.
