Prabal Gurung Fall 2012: Who's The Boss?

Fairchild Archive
Prabal Gurung is the boss, and unquestionably so. Yesterday afternoon, fashion's best and brightest lined the hallways of the IAC building on Manhattan's west side to see what Prabal had in store for next fall. The crowd itself, dotted with celebrities and fashion power players, served as an indicator that Mr. Gurung is one of New York's most talented designers.
But on to the clothes. The show opened with a series of aggressive black looks that were vamped up with sheer cutouts. Prabal played with materials like patent, fur and an iridescent oil-slick neoprene that will most certainly grace some street style blogs come fall 2012. Next came a lively shot of blue looks where the designer showed off his mastery of prints. Last season, he found inspiration in floral photography; this time around, he morphed a steer's skull into a mesmerizing swirling pattern. And just before the finale, we were treated to a group of shimmering gold looks fit for the reddest of carpets.
The best thing about Prabal's clothing is its incredible workmanship—something that probably drives the designer to the point of insanity at times. Yet everything always appears lighter than air, and the models almost seem to float in his clothes. That's not something you come across at every show, and it's something we're hoping will continue for years to come. Prabal's career is still young, but we can assure you he's got more great work to come.
