Rose Byrne and Dree Hemingway Celebrate Sandro's Store Opening
It's not every day a writer gets to interview her longtime girl crush—so when I spied Bridesmaids star Rose Byrne across the room at last night's Sandro store opening, I made a beeline for the Aussie actress. She's been a favorite of mine ever since playing the awesome Duchesse de Polignac in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, so I jumped at the chance to pick her brain about all things fashion-related.
First, we had to discuss her amazing sequined Elie Saab jumpsuit from last month's SAG Awards—my hands-down favorite look of the night. "It was a risky thing to do," she laughed. "I didn't realize it would be as controversial as it was. I mean, come on—it's 2012!"
When it comes to putting together her day-to-day looks, though, Rose likes to keeps her style inspiration local. "I'm always inspired by the people I see around my neighborhood in the East Village. There are so many great characters around there—people with really fearless, eclectic style." And though she originally hails from Sydney, Rose has a weakness for French dressing, naming both Sandro and another iconic Gallic label as favorites. "I just did a big A.P.C. sale haul," she told me. "I got this great cape that I'm really excited to wear."
Later on, I chatted with lady of the hour Dree Hemingway, who was hosting the fête in honor of her new capsule collection for Sandro. As it turns out, some of the inspiration for her designs came from an unlikely source. "I have this book called The Stonemasters that's all about male rock climbers," she said. "They used to camp out in the mountains, and the book has all these beautiful photos that capture their travels using this really color-saturated '70s-era film. Their clothes were full of these pink tones that had been bleached by the sun."
In keeping with the mountain climbers' way of dressing, Dree's pieces are rife with faded-out desert colors and rugged denim separates. "Although mainly," the model told me, "I just liked reading that book because those boys in it were super cute."
