American Idol Launches a Clothing Line: How Reality Shows Are Changing

Ever since Tommy Hilfiger joined the American Idol family a few weeks ago, the televised singing competition has placed a greater focus on fashion. The designer has been lending his extensive expertise to the show's contestants—and soon, fans will be able to purchase their own stage-ready looks.
Starting April 20th, "Authentic Icon," an American Idol-inspired collection, is launching on Kohls.com and in the retailer's locations nationwide. According to WWD, the clothes will have an "Americana feel" and include plenty of denim, graphic T-shirts and blazers. Although exact prices have not yet been disclosed, they are sure to be very affordable—Kohl's is known for selling celebrity-backed lines for reasonable costs. (Including clothes from Idol judge Jennifer Lopez, which you can purchase right here.)
American Idol's new emphasis on fashion seems to follow a larger trend we've been noticing in reality programs. Rather than address just one aspect of talent, networks are trying to churn out well-rounded mega-stars. Fashion Star incorporates designing with a commercial aspect and the newer seasons of America's Next Top Model place a very heavy emphasis on personal branding. What do you think? Do you purchase things created by a popular televison shows and reality personalities? Or do you prefer buying the work of traditional designers?
