Karl Lagerfeld Is the Official Scenographer For the 26th Biennale des Antiquaires: We Explain What That Actually Means

Karl investigates the floor plan for the Beaux-Arts Grand Palais.

Just when we had Karl Lagerfeld pegged as a ponytail wearing, Diet Coke guzzling, master designer who does some freelance illustration, photography and directing on the side—he surprises us with a completely new gig. This time, the fashion world's enigma has taken on the title of official scenographer for the 26th Biennale des Antiquaires. In case these terms and titles aren't part of your everyday vocabulary, let us explain in English (compliments of a little reasearch):

The Biennale des Antiquaires is Paris' oldest air fair and sells precious jewelry, artwork and antiques to serious collectors. A scenographer is the person in charge of an environment's appearance. Which means the Kaiser's role in all this is to create a beautiful environment for the upcoming event. Luckily, he has a great raw space to start with. This year, for the first time ever, vendors will gather at the Beaux-Arts Grand Palais.

"The era is different. I wanted to evoke, not reconstitute," he said about the project. "The intended effect is that the visitor immediately feels enveloped by the atmosphere as soon as he enters the Grand Palais."

If you happen to be in Paris between September 14 and 23, be sure to stop by to take in Karl's final product. We have no idea what it will look like, but this is the man who created a crystal covered runway for Chanel. So we're betting it's going to be good.
