Laura McLaws Helms: Seven Days, Seven Outfits
This Brooklyn-based scholar is currently getting her doctorate in fashion history at the London College of Fashion, while also flexing her style knowledge as a curator. And given her weakness for vintage gowns, '70s statement pieces and Terry de Havilland's dramatic platforms, she certainly knows how to mix and match items from different eras to dramatic effect. Here's a look at a week's worth of Laura's ensembles.
Today I got to interview my idol, the shoe designer Terry de Havilland, for the online magazine Because. Here I am in his showroom wearing a lavender silk Tracy Feith blouse, Zara mini and a pair of his wedges—the Margaux Waves.
This was taken at the closing party for the House of the Noblemen exhibition in London, in front of a work by Stefano Curto. I'm wearing a 1970s jersey and leather dress by one of my favorite designers, Jean Muir, with a small ladybug necklace by Eddie Borgo and a pair of de Havilland wedges with a cutout heart in the heel.
Nothing like having a work lunch at Claridge's, the most glamorous spot in London! I chose to wear a Rodarte x Opening Ceremony mint silk gown with an antique ivory bracelet I found in an antiques store in North Carolina—and yet another pair of de Havilland wedges (these are nude and gold).
I celebrated my first night in Paris for Fashion Week with a fun catch-up dinner with friends at Hotel Amour. I wore a backless Acne gown with a custom suede-and-rhinestone Terry de Havilland collar, my great-grandmother's alligator evening bag and a vintage Biba fox fur coat from 1974.
Running between shows and showroom appointments all day today, so some comfort was required—as was warmth. I paired a Preen Fall 2007 minidress with Phi ankle boots, my vintage Biba fur and vintage Emmanuelle Khanh sunglasses.
Here I am at my best friend Eddie Borgo's showroom, checking out his fall collection. I'm wearing a blouse by another good friend of mine, [Camilla] Staerk, along with an early-1970s Biba lurex skirt, Terry de Havilland wedges and an Eddie Borgo pavé choker and ring.
Getting ready to hit some parties in Paris in a vintage 1980s-era Sarah Whitworth corset dress and Terry de Havilland wedges.
