Tommy Hilfiger Joins American Idol
Since its 2002 debut, we've tuned into American Idol for great music, inspiring back stories and entertaining (and sometimes crazy) celebrity judges. And now, we can count on the addictive reality show for a fashion fix, thanks to the the arrival of Tommy Hilfiger. For the rest of the season, the legendary designer will act an "image adviser" to the program's finalists by helping them develop their personal styles both on and off stage.
"I am honored to be joining Ryan, Steven, Jennifer, Randy and Jimmy for the 11th season of American Idol," Hilfiger says of his newest gig. "Musicians can bring such a unique vision and personality to the stage. I admire risk takers who share my belief in the power of fashion to transform and influence, and I look forward to working with the artists to guide them in defining their performance style and identity."
Hilfiger may be known for creating preppy polos and argyle knits, but he also has plenty of experience in the music industry. In the past he has dressed A-list performers—including Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Britney Spears—in his namesake label and, when he was just starting out, would style his brother's band for local performances. His new position however, is something of first on a televised singing competition; we're really interested to see it plays out. Although the contestants' talent is obviously the most important factor to consider, we're big believers in dressing the part, because the biggest stars have the whole package, you know?
What do you think of Tommy joining the American Idol crew, do you think it is important to have a style mentor on set? (And, like us, are you kind of hoping someone takes the stage in a pair of his over-the-knee duck boots?)
Catch Tommy Hilfiger on American Idol next Thursday, March 15 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
