Betsey Johnson Will Survive Her Current Business Troubles—Here's Why
Yesterday afternoon, the fashion world was shocked to learn that Betsey Johnson had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Over the next month, the famously kooky-cool designer will be closing the vast majority of her stores and letting go about 350 employees. Without a doubt, this is incredibly sad news—69-year-old Betsey, beloved for her post-fashion-show cartwheels and enduring love of all things pink and sparkly, is one of the industry's favorite ladies.
Still, there's plenty of hope in the midst of this disappointing announcement. For starters, Betsey herself isn't going anywhere, and will remain at her eponymous company and continue designing her lower-priced (and more commercially-viable) Betsey Johnson collection, which is currently carried in numerous department stores across the country. She also told WWD that her brand's runway show at September Fashion Week will proceed as planned—excellent news for editors who love basking in the presentation's pink confetti and thumping dance soundtrack each season. Additionally, Betsey's got not one, but two fragrance deals in the works—the first of which will hit shelves this fall. Lastly, there's her very own reality series Betsey + Lulu to look forward to, which premieres this summer. And when it comes to dramatic onscreen plot twists, well, yesterday's news pretty much takes the cake.
Let's also not forget the fact that Betsey's signature oddball designs are incredibly adorable. Shop a few of our favorites in the slideshow below!
