Carolina Herrera on Why She Loves White Blouses, What Every Woman Should Own and the Importance of Eating Right
While most successful designers begin their careers very early by putting all other aspects of their lives on hold, Carolina Herrera decided to have it all—just not at the same time. The Venezuelan native got married and raised three girls before launching her eponymous line at 40, proving that it's never too late to start something new. (Miuccia Prada, by the way, only began designing clothes at 39. Great minds....) These days, the 73 year old's RTW and bridal collections are in high demand. As are her personal style secrets, right down to why she always wears a crisp white blouse.
"They go better than anything else with certain outfits, short skirts as well as pants, and even long evening skirts," Herrera recently told AARP in an interview. "They're also very flattering, because they light up one's face." She also had plenty of advice on how to wear her signature piece.
"Essential pieces—of the best possible quality that fits your budget—are the most important ingredients. It's better to have just a few high-quality things than many things that aren't," she explained. "Wear a white blouse with black or beige pants, a good-looking belt, a pearl necklace and well-polished shoes, with a pretty purse in a cheerful color such as yellow, and you'll look perfect. In winter, we'll always look good in a beautiful jacket—or a coat of the best cut and quality possible—over a simple blouse or pullover sweater and straight-leg pants."
As for her beauty routine, the designer said that, "it's essential to eat right," and "to have love in one's life, because it makes us more human and, incidentally, more beautiful."
