Zac Posen On His New Z Spoke for Lord & Taylor Collection and Dressing Girls Star Jemima Kirke
Zac Posen might be famous for his glamorous red carpet gowns—but with his new Z Spoke collection for Lord & Taylor, the designer was determined to maintain that celeb-beloved craftsmanship. "My [runway] collection is very trend-driven—it's about timelessness, emotion, craft and technique," he told me at yesterday's event honoring the new capsule. "So with these Lord & Taylor pieces, I wanted to pare everything down and get down to the signature of my brand: the construction and the seaming. At the end of the day, what's easiest for a woman is simplicity, so I wanted to keep the pieces really clean so I could use the best fabrications possible for this price point."
With dresses retailing from about $149 to $199, that price point is new territory for Zac—his catwalk gowns go for thousands (and sometimes tens of thousands), while his contemporary Z Spoke collection runs somewhere in the mid-hundreds. But according to the man himself, it's a joy to cater to a broader range of customers. "I think it's very American to create something that reaches more people, people who follow and love fashion," he explained. "I really believe in creating clothing that's accessible, both in terms of price and size range." Indeed, his Z Spoke for Lord & Taylor line is available in sizes zero through 16—and Zac says he loves dressing women of all shapes.
"On my runways, I've always tried to use girls of different sizes and heights. Jemima Kirke, who's on Girls now, walked my first two runway shows—she was a child then! So I sent her out alongside [model] Erin O'Connor...and clearly, they've got totally different body types."
Returning to the topic of his A-list fan base, I asked Zac what he'd like to see bride-to-be Angelina Jolie wear on her wedding day—after all, she's worn the designer's work before. "Well, designing a wedding gown is so private!" he laughed. "So she'll have to call me. Yeah, that one would definitely be a private appointment."
