Make Room For Fashion: Comfort Meets Style

As a busy mom, I’d say that ease and comfort are pretty important words in my style vocabulary. Unfortunately, "relaxed fashion" is a bit of an oxymoron. That's why I'm so excited about rediscovering James Perse.

I’ve seen James Perse's soft tees and dresses hanging on the racks at the big department stores before. But to be honest, I’ve always walked right past, opting instead for something brighter, bolder: a more obvious statement. It wasn’t until I walked into the new James Perse store in East Hampton, N.Y., that my obsession began. With floor to ceiling windows that look out onto a bamboo garden, teak shutters, white-washed walls and modern furniture – which are also Perse designs—I didn’t feel as though I were in a boutique at all, but rather someone’s impeccably styled beach house.

I guess I’ve always thought James Perse was a little too “loungey” and casual to wear for everyday city life. So not true. The linen and sheer slub jersey fabrics are lightweight and laid back, but the designs are sophisticated and functional, perfect for achieving an “I-don’t-want-to-look-like-I’m-trying too hard” style. From the open knit cap-sleeve sweaters to the super-duper-comfy cotton twill cargo pants, I'm officially hooked. These pieces are going to keep me cool and collected as I attempt to stay on pace with my son in the hot summer months ahead.

Now, if only that East Hampton store had a pool!
