Snap Poll: Would You Wear Seersucker?
Seersucker is awesome because the more wrinkly it gets, the better it looks. Form follows function, like it's designed to be balled up in a monogrammed weekend bag en route to the Cape.
So maybe the genesis of seersucker's status as a preppy summer staple is a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing. I don't know. What I do know is that beyond its resilience to sticky, humid weather and a spilled Southside or two, the soft, puckered fabric has something else going for it: a bit of ironic charm. Well, when worn in a certain way.
Just as I wouldn't pair my plaid shirt with hiking boots and a s'mores stick, I have definite non-starters for wearing seersucker. Like American Apparel's brown seersucker skirt, which would look kinda awesome with some little kid-ish Bass loafers and a slightly racy, sheer, sleeveless blouse. The seersucker would mix in a dash of overt, cheeky preppiness, and I'm cool with that.
But I'd never wear it with a popped-collar polo shirt, a boat shoe or anything that make me look like a cardboard cutout from the Wedding Crashers football scene. And I'd never, ever wear seersucker in that environment: to a barbecue, a Derby party, an afternoon at the beach. I like it as a strictly city thing instead. That said, though, I'd wear any of these seersucker pieces in the slideshow below, provided they abide by my rules. Would you?
