Today Is Valentino Garavani's 80th Birthday
Not to be outdone by the 50th anniversary of his namesake label Valentino, Valentino Garavani—the man and former designer—is turning 80 in the same year. Or, today, to be precise.
I don't know what Mr. Garavani is doing to celebrate his birthday, though I imagine it involves cutting into a three-tiered, crimson-rosette covered cake. I also imagine that cake, Mr. Garavani and a stable of leggy models will be on a yacht docked near a French island with an esoteric name I'm not cool enough to know how to pronounce. They'll all wear organza dresses, except Mr. Garavani himself, who will be in some form of slightly-too-short swim trunks.
But since I'm not invited to that party (and, to be fair, I'm not even sure it's happening) I'll have to find another way to celebrate Valentino's 80 years. Even though Mr. Garavani officially retired four years ago, I'm pretty sure it'd still be doing him a solid if I bought any of the pieces in the slideshow below—either an investment item from the Valentino runway collection or a cocktail dress from RED Valentino, the more wallet-friendly offshoot. And if not, it could at least be an early birthday present to myself. (That day is five months away, but it's never too early to start celebrating.)
My size isn't available, but the half-size smaller is. I might buy them anyway and suffer a little toe pain.
Leave it to those people at Valentino to find a way to put ruffles on skinny pants.
This is amazing because it's "Valentino red," yes, but also because it highlights the collarbone, a universally flattering spot.
This makes me like studs again. It's just so pretty.
With an aggressive shoe, it could be a little punk. But it's also sweet and summer-wedding-appropriate with a classic pump.
It would be incredible peeking out of the pocket of a tuxedo jacket, then paired with casual denim.
