12 Fashion Tips From the World's Chicest Grandmas
Style is one of those things that gets better with age, right? Well if that's true, then you have no better place to look to for inspiration than your elders. And when it comes to the most stylish senior citizens, there is nobody more seasoned than Ari Seth Cohen, the mind behind Advanced Style. If you're a fan of the blog, you'll be delighted to know that Ari has turned it into a book that you can buy right here.
To help celebrate the launch of Advanced Style, the book, we asked Ari for a few of the best lessons in style from his subjects. The women surveyed range from 70-100 years old, so we're certain they're experts.
Joyce 80 years old believes that elegance is of the utmost importance:
“You know, for an older woman I don’t go for style, I go after elegance. That’s what I go for. It was always elegance.”
“Don’t be afraid to look different.”
"The real secret is being in love with life and realizing what you have.”
"Style is about the right jewelry, the right know-how, the right neckline, and above all the right attitude."
Ruth Kobin is an amazing 100-year-old lady. She practices Pilates once a week, and dresses up at all times because, ”You never know who you will meet along the way.”
“Invest in quality pieces, they never go out of style."
“I have been active my whole life. An old Elizabeth Arden ad said, 'If you want to look like this when you are 40, start when you are 20.'"
At 100-year-old Rose has a lifetime of life and style tips to share: “Be more, appear less.”
"Inexpensive lipstick is as good as expensive, only better!" Rose has tried every brand from Chanel to Lauder and has recently been turned on to Revlon.
Be unique: "If everyone is wearing it, then it's not for me."
“You get treated nicer if you are well dressed. I don’t want to go around like a dreary old lady. Yes, you can break the rules sometimes. I’m not ready for a convent or anything, so I can wear leopard glasses.”
"Sunglasses are better than a facelift, they hide the ravages of time, and let you spy on people."
So there you have it, undeniably sound advice from some of the world's most fashionable style veterans. Keep these ladies in mind when you're on your next shopping trip, and think back to what you can learn from your own grandmother. I know mine has style for years to come.
And don't forget, you can get more wisdom from these women and Ari in his new book.
