That Marchesa Contemporary Collection Is Definitely Happening
Well, the rumors were true—Marchesa's going (more) mainstream, if not exactly mass. The brand's co-founders, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, have signed a deal with Hong Kong-based clothing company Li & Fung to develop a lower-priced contemporary collection set to launch around Pre-Fall 2013. Standing in contrast to Marchesa's existing runway goods, Notte dress collection and bridal wares, the as-yet-unnamed contemporary line will offer clothes priced from around $150 to $750.
"We have always had a vision for Marchesa to be a lifestyle brand," Chapman told WWD. "It's going to be under the Marchesa umbrella, but with a slightly different feel. We have been so specific for such a long time, and the idea to broaden out to a different consumer, and to our same consumer as well. We haven't really looked at that market yet. My dream is to give Marchesa many facets, and that's just one of them."
Considering Li & Fung is the very same company behind the imminent revival of Vena Cava and also backs Rachel Zoe, we think Chapman and Craig have picked the prime partners for their foray into the contemporary arena. As for those other "facets" Chapman would like to eventually develop within Marchesa, your guesses are as good as ours.
