Leighton Meester Used to Buy Everything at Garage Sales and Dress Like a Homeless Person

Leighton Meester may have made a lot of money from her five seasons on Gossip Girl and multiple movie roles—most recently, she was cast as the female lead in That's My Boy with Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg—but she still loves a good bargain.

"I used to buy everything at garage sales," our July cover girl confided. "It was hard to give up! I'd be like, 'But this crazy sweater is amazing, and it only cost 25 cents!'" These days, however, she's taken her experience from working with top stylists—and embodying fashion-savvy Blair Waldorf—to turn what her friends call dressing "like a homeless person" into a enviable sense of style.

"I’ve learned from Blair," she admits. "Now I like to pepper in something designer with my usual stuff." That "usual stuff," she reveals, usually includes a bodysuit—especially when she's performing her music. "I hate bras, at least when I’m singing," she explained. Her onstage sartorial trick will probably get a lot of play in the upcoming months, as the star plans to release an album by the end of this year—one of her many childhood dreams that have come to fruition.

"When you’re little, you’re at your most honest and welcoming and playful," she said. "Acting and writing and singing—everything I’m doing now—I’m finally doing it exactly how I always wanted to."
