One To Watch: Vashtie, Downtown's Sweetheart and Designer of Violette
I've gotten to know a little bit about Vashtie—and can confirm that there's nothing that this woman is not good at. Just for being cool (and very talented), the label Island Def Jam signed her on as a creative director to revamp the company. Soon after, Vashtie came to be known by the masses for the independent music video she shot for the song "Us Placers," a track from a Kanye West mixtape. It got one million YouTube views in a single day. Her instant success led to even more major gigs, like directing videos for Solange Knowles, Kid Cudi, Justin Bieber and—most recently—my new favorite rapper, Joey Bada$$.
Not only is she the creative mind behind so many cool projects, but she has really good style—and luckily, there's a way that you can cop it. You can shop her line VIOLETTE on her website, which is made for those really cool tomboy-type girls. It's pretty much like what I wear all of the time—so if you like my style, you'll love hers. Her site also stocks cool vintage pieces (I'm very disappointed that the Jordan jersey is sold out right now, but I'm going to keep checking to see what else she posts).
Who runs the world? Girls. Vashtie, we think you are really dope and we're watching to see what you do next. Oh, and if you're in town, she throws a really good '90s dance party—like the one at Santos Party House she hosted last night in honor the release of Smoke DZA's album Rugby Thompson, which made me an hour late for work this morning.
