The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic: Stars, Sun and Some Good Old-Fashioned Horseplay
For some, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer. But if you're as horse- (and hat-) crazy as yours truly, it all begins with the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, an afternoon event filled with pretty ponies, lots o' celebs, oversized headwear and more champagne than should probably be consumed during daytime hours.
On Saturday, I hopped a ferry to Liberty State Park for a little divot-stomping and people-watching.
Though the forecast had originally called for rain, guests including Zoe Saldana, Padma Lakshmi and Rachel Zoe arrived to searing sunshine and temperatures in the high '80s. But for jewelry designer Genevieve Jones, who showed up in a mostly-raffia Burberry Prorsum outfit, summertime dressing is all about picking the right fabrics. Her secret? She sticks with lightweight knits or crocheted pieces. "Because of the holes, they breathe really well," she said. "They're especially good for when I go to Thailand—that's where I produce my jewelry. It's even hotter there than in New York!" Because of the day's unexpected heat, she confessed she'd skipped straightening her hair and had packed "plenty of extra ponytail holders" in case she needed to whip up a quick chignon.
World-famous polo player (and man of the hour) Nacho Figueras, who led his team Black Watch to victory on Saturday, has no excuse for hiding his notoriously perfect hair. But unfortunately for those looking for follicular tips (a conditioner recommendation, at least?), Nacho admitted he comes by his crowning feature naturally. "My hair is my hair!" he laughed with a shrug. "No secrets here. I just got lucky. I got my hair from my mom."
Another of the day's surprises? Turns out British actor Clive Owen, who assumed hosting duties for the day, is a secret fan of the equine species. "I'm a horse racing man," he explained on the red carpet. "I'm actually going to the Belmont Stakes next weekend. I've never been to a polo match before...but since I'm shooting a movie nearby right now, this worked out great."
