Valentino Makes Costumes for the New York City Ballet: Will More Designers Create For the Stage?

For its Fall 2012 Gala, the New York City Ballet is celebrating Valentino Garavani's prolific career by asking the designer to create costumes for the event. They'll be worn during dances orchestrated by master choreographers Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon.

Although I'm sure all of the one-of-a-kind ensembles will be beautiful, I'm also excited for the outfits that will be worn during a performance of George Balanchine’s Rubies (from his full ballet Jewels). While this particular group of costumes were not designed by Valentino, the dance was chosen in honor of the Italian label's signature hue. I'm already imagining something similar to those crimson point shoes and sexy tutus from the final number in Center Stage.

While designers creating wardrobes for live theatrical productions is nothing new—Coco Chanel designed costumes for the Ballets Russes in the 1920s—it's certainly becoming a trendy thing again. The Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte have worked on similar projects, outfitting both ballets and operas over the past year. What other collaborations would you like to see? Could Alexander McQueen for the Rockettes be next?
