Brooks Brothers' Costumes for The Great Gatsby: Your First Look

Now that we've reviewed the unbe-freakin'-lievable trailer for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, we're thrilled to share a first look at the menswear ensembles created exclusively for the film by heritage label Brooks Brothers.

Ralph Lauren may have provided the wardrobe for the 1974 adaptation of Gatsby starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, but this time around, Brooks Brothers was tapped to make all the outfits for the flick's dapper dudes, including Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway), Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan). According to WWD, the menswear brand "worked closely with Academy Award-winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin...to produce more than 500 day and evening ensembles—some 1,700 pieces, including neckwear, accessories and shoes—for the cast and extras."

Interestingly, says Martin, Gatsby author F. Scott Fitzgerald himself used to shop at Brooks Brothers. "It was this most basic and fundamental connection that had made our collaboration so authentic," she explained. "Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald's writings as a representation of the ultimate gentlemen's purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction." And to clothe the guys of Gatsby this time around, Martin and the Brooks Brothers team delved into the company's own archives, researched Roaring Twenties-era photographs and catalogues and examined antique suits from Fitzgerald's day. You can see some of the fruits of their labor in the movie still above—and needless to say, we can't wait for all the looks when the film opens on December 25.

We should also mention that while Tiffany & Co. will officially be providing all the jewelry for Gatsby, the official women's clothier for the project is "under wraps for now." Any guesses, people? We think Chanel, Lanvin or Louis Vuitton could do a bang-up job...though there's always Ralph Lauren....
