lucky listens: paloma faith's "picking up the pieces" video
With style muses like Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page, it's no surprise that Paloma Faith, Britain's latest singing sensation to make her way to the States, is a fashion force in the making. After all, the quirky chanteuse turns up on U.K. red carpets wearing designers like Vivienne Westwood and Dolce & Gabbana, and attends fancy fashion week events like the Hogan by Karl Lagerfled cocktail party. But style inspiration for her latest video, "Picking Up the Pieces," came not from the queens of Old Hollywood but from the glamorous lives of as British aristocrats in the early 20th century. And who can blame her? The super-feminine lace and curve-hugging silhouettes transport us back to a more romantic time. We’ve already shopped out PBS’s Downton Abbey and Baz Luhrmann’s opulent The Great Gatsby trailer, but we couldn’t resist giving Faith’s sassy take on period-inspired fashion some attention as well.
So, while a trip to a picturesque estate in the English countryside might be a stretch, recreating the lady-like ensembles in Faith’s video doesn’t have to be. We’ve scoured the web to find pieces worthy of the period’s drama.
