Bags That Give Back: Joy Gryson's New IIIBeCa Collection

We've long been suckers for Joy Gryson's incredibly soft leather carryalls, from the triple crossbody bags in her luxe namesake collection to the more accessible woven offerings in her Olivia Harris by Joy Gryson line. Now, the accessories designer is expanding her brand with an all-new label, IIIBeCa, that's launching with four simple, classic silhouettes cast in head-turning hues. And in addition to being her most reasonably-priced collection yet—nothing's over $200—IIIBeCa donates 3 percent of its wholesale proceeds to a trio of wonderful NYC nonprofits. Read on for the designer's take on her newest venture.

Lucky: First off, what inspired the shape of these styles? They're very different from bags you've done before...

Joy Gryson: When I was growing up, my favorite handbag was the Il Bisonte bag. I remember going to L.A. with some friends, walking around on Rodeo Drive, and I was in heaven when I went into the Il Bisonte store. I loved the idea of something old school but done in a modern, new way. Since I launched the line with only a handful of styles this first season, the silhouettes are very purposeful in their look and use—it was important that each one existed for a reason. It is all about simplicity, but with an attitude and point of difference.

Tell us a bit about the charities involved in IIIBeCa, and what each means to you.

Family Focus Adoption Services is very close to my heart for many reasons. My mother is one of the founders of this Queens-based adoption agency and has been the Executive Director for the past 25 years. I remember when my parents and all of the founders first started with the inception of this agency, holding meetings in our home to discuss the purpose, goals and processes to make this dream become a reality. I worked for the agency during my college summers, so I know firsthand how hard they work and the dedication put forth to create "forever families!" I am also adopted, and am very fortunate to have grown up with a family full of love and respect. The work that FFAS does will give so many others the same opportunity.

My husband Peter unfortunately lost his mother, Velma, to cancer. She was treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering during her battle with the disease, and we will always be extremely grateful for the kindness and care that she was given during that time. We want to make sure that we help Memorial Sloan-Kettering continue to give that same kind of help to many others, and support their continued research.

Lastly, the 911 Memorial is so important to us because Peter and I were in lower Manhattan on September 11th. We witnessed the tragic events unfold, and now we live just blocks away from the Memorial and it is part of our community and our daily lives. Although we live so close by, many others do not, and we do not want anyone to forget all of the individuals who were killed in the terrorist attacks that day—as well as in the bombing on Feb. 26th, 1993.
