Designer Marcia Patmos on her Favorite Summertime Knits and Collaborating with Manolo Blahnik

Today's Deal of the Day is a doozy—we're offering you 50 percent off a luxe-striped sweater from M. Patmos. You might remember the brand's designer, Marcia Patmos, as one-half of cashmere company Lutz & Patmos, which once collaborated with the likes of Jane Birkin, Kirsten Dunst and Natalia Vodianova. Last year, Marcia launched her own solo label, which remains true to her knitwear roots while mixing in harder materials like leather and even wood. We chatted with the designer about how to wear knits in warmer weather, how she keeps her brand earth-friendly and the shoe collabs she's got in the pipeline.

Lucky: You spent a decade working with Tina Lutz on a label called Lutz & Patmos. What differentiates M. Patmos from your past work? How are the two collections similar and/or different?

Marcia Patmos: M. Patmos is a knitwear-based collection with a diverse offering in terms of yarns and techniques. There are select cut-and-sew, beaded and tailored pieces mixed in to create entire looks. Additionally, knit and woven or leather outerwear styles have been a new category for us that has done very well.

I understand eco-friendliness and sustainability are both very important to you. How do you strive to keep your company as "green" as possible?

It starts in the office—simple things like using the two-sided printing function to save paper. I have groups each season produced on zero-waste, seamless technology or that incorporate hand-knitting, hand-crocheting, hand-looming and hand-beading. I use natural, eco-friendly, and organic fibers every season and am always on the lookout for new developments in yarns, finishes, etc. I also always try to bring eco-friendly ideas into my collaborations, like with the Spring and Fall ‘12 shoes we did with Manolo Blahnik or the Fall ‘12 jewelry we created with TENTHOUSANDTHINGS.

As a designer who's perhaps best known for her knits, how do you adapt your signature pieces for summertime wear?

Layering. Featherweight cotton, linen, and cashmere are still perfect for summer, air-conditioned offices or breezy nights.

For Spring 2012, as you mentioned, you collaborated with Manolo Blahnik on some really cool flat sandals and heels. If this a collab you plan to continue?

Yes, I did some vegetable-tanned leather booties for Fall ‘12 and have some exciting new sandals in the works for Spring ‘13 Fashion Week, too!
