Lea Michele On Rachel Barry's Wardrobe, Wearing Leather and Why You Should Buy Her Handprint

Lea Michele and her Glee character Rachel Barry share remarkable vocal skills and a megawatt smile. But the similarities stop there. Unlike her fame-focused alter ego, the actress/singer/all-around performer has a number of interests beyond the stage. When she's not busy filming, Lea spends her time working on projects close to her heart. Most recently, an initiative to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. We met the star (wearing a shocking blue Oscar de la Renta dress) during an appearance for the charity last Friday and she filled us in on the cause. Then, the conversation veered toward fashion….

Lucky: Can you tell me a little about this project and your involvement with Habitat for Humanity?
Well, they asked me to come here today because they're doing this amazing thing, Valspar Hands for Habitat, where celebrities have donated their handprints. All the proceeds will go to the Habitat Disaster Response Program for the Valspar Hands for Habitat. It's a really great thing. People can go and bid on the hand prints and raise money for this amazing organization. (Editor's note: Everything is live now—start bidding here!)

You character on Glee is known for a having a very cutesy, girlish sense of style—and is often teased for it in the show. Would you wear any of her outfits in real life?
I probably never would wear any of her clothes, except for maybe her shoes. I really love her shoes. She has some great shoes this season—Marni high heels and penny loafers, Marc Jacobs, Prada… Like, they go for it with her shoes. Very awesome, very preppy. Like, chunky high-heeled shoes.

So how do you dress off set?
Comfortable, casual, clean. You know—you look very put together but you're actually very comfortable.

Any specific brands, lines, stores…?
For me it will be like a great pair of jeans—I really love Citizens and I really love Mother Jeans. Have you tried them yet? They are like, the most comfortable jeans. And I love those Acne white T-shirts that are like, so comfy. And I'll pair that a really nice scarf and my like, you know…boots.

And the red carpet--who are your favorites?
Oh, I love Oscar de la Renta. I love Pucci, Versace, Marchesa…all of them!

Also, I've read that you're vegan. Do you wear leather?
I'm actually vegetarian but I really try to be as minimal as I can. That's just my preference. I really think that people should do what it is that they would like to do.

So, these days it feels like collaborations and celebrity lines are bigger than ever before. Would you ever consider partnering with a brand on your own fashion or beauty collection in the future?
I would really love that, I think that would be really great. You know, it obviously takes a lot of time and effort, so I'd want to make sure I really had the time to put everything into it. But, yeah, I think that would be really fun.
