Proenza Schouler Is Opening Its First Ever Store Tomorrow
Tomorrow morning, in what used to be a sushi restaurant, Proenza Schouler designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough are opening their very first store. The new shop is located in New York City's Upper East Side neighborhood, but despite its fancy zip code, reflects the brand's signature downtown style.
Under the direction of architect David Adjaye, the two-story boutique is decorated with gritty-cool details like exposed ceiling beams, steel shelving and—in one room—concrete walls. "We wanted it to be the antithesis of a high-gloss Madison Avenue store," McCollough explained to WWD. To balance the industrial environment, leafy green cacti are placed throughout the space and the changing area is furnished with dark brown leather.
Also adding warmth to the raw atmosphere is the label's sumptuous array of richly colored and textured clothing. For the grand opening, racks are filled with the company's Himalaya-inspired pre-fall collection and a wide range of handbags, including one version—a blue python PS1—designed by Jack’s sister, Kate. Luckily, even if you can't make it to NYC (or just hate going above 14th Street!) there are plenty of e-commerce sites with amazing Proenza Schouler pieces.
