Shop It: Leather Jackets to Wear Now
Half the fun of working at a fashion magazine is checking out the fabulous outfits that everyone on staff is wearing each day. On more than one occasion, I've taken wardrobe inspiration from a fresh-faced intern and her sartorially ambitious ensemble. Lately though, I've been noticing a proliferation of leather jackets effortlessly layered over the usual summer fare—even though it's barely August.
Maybe that's because everyone is working on a three-month-ahead time-frame (it's all woolly winter apparel on the racks lining the halls). Or, it's just simple functionality: the office temps do hover dangerously close to meatlocker status. Either way, it's pretty cool to bust out that plush leather early—and not in the form of guy-bewildering shorts.

I know the word "coveted" is overused, but I truly have coveted this leather-sleeved army jacket on quite a few editors in the office. It instantly toughens up a girly dress and pairs perfectly with a pair of skinny jeans and booties.
This moto-jacket has a stretchy jersey back panel (with a cool fishtail hem), which allows for a super sexy, body-con fit.
The slouchy silhouette and soft caramel shade of this style allow for versatile layering over a flippy summer dress now and a light fall sweater in a couple months.
This classic tough-girl moto-jacket is perfect to throw on over any outfit when the air-con starts blasting in the office.
Blue jeans and leather are meant for each other, so this denim-sleeved moto-jacket makes total sense. Try it with a pair of skinny jeans as a gateway experiment prior to a full-blown denim-on-denim look.
This fringed leather jacket is a little bit Isabel Marant, a little bit Bon Jovi. Break out the Aqua Net, ladies.
A peplum is at it's finest when it's formed out of buttery-soft pleated leather. Love the subtle shoulder accents, too.
This crimson leather and modal-paneled jacket is the cool girl alternative to a cardigan. The fitted and flared back is an interesting complement to the loose, draped front.
If geniuine leather really isn't your thing (and kudos for making it through this slideshow, btw), a sleek vegan leather moto-jacket is your pay-off. Added benefits: the pleated panels on the sides, buckle-accented collar and wallet-friendly price tag.
