The Golden Tote's LA Surprise

       

During the economic meltdown, Sarah Woodward Becker and Sarah Cius, the talented duo behind LA-based label Puella, found themselves, like many designers, burdened with excess inventory. So, they came up with a plan: they’d fill a so-called grab bag of ten random items from their line and sell them, sight unseen, on their website. “We priced it at $150, and each bag was different and a total surprise to the customer,” explains Becker. Daily Candy picked up the story and the next day Becker and Cius sold several years of inventory in about three hours, with a huge waiting list, to boot.

Needless to say, they figured they should continue offering their grab bag sales and soon were manufacturing more clothing simply to fill the bags. Now, still riding the grab bag wave, Becker and Cius have officially launched Golden Tote, with bags currently available in two versions—a two to three-item tote for $49 and a five to seven-item bag for $149. (The bags are valued up to $600.) Each tote contains a variety of wardrobe-supplementing staples from dresses and t-shirts to scarves and hats from Puella, along with coveted labels like LNA, Splendid, and Saint Grace. This was one temptation we found hard to resist. (Spoiler alert: the one we ordered and recently received featured a beach-ready navy and white striped maxi dress by Puella, a strawfedora hat by David & Young, and cute pom pom sandals by Z&L.) But we were very glad we indulged.
