Rashida Jones on Men, Movies and Clothes

She’s Harvard educated, beautiful and multi-talented: one of those girls who you’d think would be scarily intimidating. But actress, comic book author, singer and screenwriter Rashida Jones is anything but. In fact, we got downright chummy with Jones at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills a few weeks ago, after screening her new film Celeste and Jesse Forever, which she produced, co-wrote with her friend (and former past fling!) actor Will McCormack and stars in with Andy Samberg. The movie, which opens August 3, centers on an LA-based couple on the brink of divorce. Celeste (Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) were high school sweethearts, and as much as they still love each other, they find themselves growing apart but struggling to fully break from each other. We asked Jones to divulge some relationship secrets, share how she deals with bad breakups, and, of course, tell us where she likes to shop.

What inspired you to write this movie?
I wrote it with my writing partner Will McCormack, and it was inspired by an amalgam of painful relationships that I’ve had, that he’s had, that people around us have had, etc. We felt there was a little bit of a cultural phenomenon going on where people who were our age and who had been together for a long time were splitting up but didn’t want to lose each other, so they were sneakily finding ways to stay in each other’s lives by staying friends or living together as roommates or simply staying in touch. I’ve also always been obsessed with the concept of timing in relationships. Forget about being right for each other. Timing is everything with relationships. This movie is so much about timing, because he’s ready but she’s not ready, and then she’s ready and he’s moved on.

Do you have any advice for dealing with heartache or getting over a breakup?
I would say you just kind of have to sit with it. I think finding distractions, and keeping busy is a temporary solution. Like, go running, get a three foot bong, you can do all that stuff. I’ve gone on benders and have just been an idiot. But I don’t think you learn a lesson unless you sit with it. And it’s never going to be fun. I’ve just spent so much time being in denial, trying to make things work when they don’t work and it’s just not happening. It’s just about acceptance.

Have you ever not given a guy a chance because of small annoying traits?
My standards have changed as I have gotten older. In my twenties I would be skeptical of a bad haircut, but once you turn thirty it’s more about whether he a nice person and does he open the door for me. Once you turn thirty-five, it’s more about would he make a good father. And even if you’re just liking somebody and digging on someone, I think you can’t help but think in those terms. Biologically, it’s just a goal for you and you just start to feel that way.

Where do you like to shop?
I’m so down with those French labels Sandro and Maje. I also just went to this store in New York called Assembly, which is so good. I like going to stores where you’ve never heard of any of the designers, because I feel like nowadays everything is syndicated. I like to find something a little different. There is also a website called Farfetch, and I like that one.

How has your mom, Peggy Lipton, influenced your style?
She has a pretty, timeless, classic look and she dresses her age. She manages to still be sexy but age appropriate. But that doesn’t stop people from thinking she’s my sister all the time!

Celeste and Jesse Forever opens today—check out the trailer below and catch it at a theater near you.
