Steampunk. The word itself might even sound a little bizarre, like a special kind of bathroom piping or an experimental alternative fuel source. Actually, steampunk is the name for the ultra-creative aesthetic inspired by a fictional Victorian era where steam energy is used to power all major forms of technology. Originally, steampunk began as a literary movement, inspired by the science fiction works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, but has since evolved to include steampunk art, music, video games, and, maybe most importantly, fashion.

Steampunk fashion is most associated with Victorian-inspired pieces and trends, but with a slight unconventional twist. Often steampunk attire includes elements of clock gears, lace-up boots and bodices, metal and wooden components, and even aviator-inspired goggles.

While most of these items sound like accessories that should be limited to the floor of Comic Con, steampunk fashion is totally wearable if done in moderation. A golden brooch comprised of watch parts clipped to a tweed vest can convey the perfect amount of elegant intelligence that the style has to offer, without making it look like you're on your way to a costume party.

From velvet vests to button-up booties, our favorite steampunk picks do just that.

A luxurious velvet vest can be paired with dark skinny jeans for a look that's both baroque and casual.
