Five Ways to Wear White After Labor Day

Since I no longer write the date on the top right corner of lined paper every morning, grade school-style, I realized it when I read "September" on my iCal a few hours ago. It's fall—like, officially—and I need to stop ordering rosé with every meal, sliding sunglasses atop my head 'til 9 PM and wearing many of the things in my summer wardrobe.

But I'm keeping my white dresses and white denim in rotation. I love white, and I wear it Labor Day through Labor Day largely because lots of girls don't. Woven into fall outfits like the ones below, the color's fresh, crisp and a little surprising in a way it just can't be in July.

To elevate a lazy off-duty look, swap blue jeans for white ones this fall. Paired with a patterned sweater and suede booties, the look's very "Kate Bosworth out to lunch in LA." Cozy, but stylized.

Sad but true: the black biker jacket's popularity has kinda diluted its badass effect. Fortunately, opting for a white motorcycle jacket instead will jolt that desired energy into fall separates.

Even paper-thin white fabrics can work in fall as long as they're styled properly, like here: lacing up booties and tossing on military jacket gives this sheer white summer dress a tough fall texture.

For fall, Phillip Lim and Stella McCartney focused on white pieces with black accents. Paired with dark accessories and opaque tights, those items will carry you well into winter, too.

Worn head-to-toe, white looks way more subversive than sweet and innocent. Just make sure to pick separates in substantial fabrics, like this neoprene skirt, heavy ply sweater and metal-tipped button-up.
