Kate Middleton Wore Prabal Gurung in Singapore

Kate Middleton's in Singapore right now, but I really feel like her heart is with us in New York. By wearing one of our our city's most exciting new designers, Prabal Gurung, she stole the conversation at the Spring 2013 Fashion Week tents this morning—even at an awesomely vibrant J.Crew collection crackling with neon baseball caps and micro-floral print pumps (more on that later).

Some speculate that the Duchess wore the dress by Singapore-born Gurung as a sign of respect for the country she's visiting, and that makes sense. But I don't think the decision stopped there.

Prabal might not be Margiela or Jeremy Scott, but he's still one of the darker, more brooding designers working in the world of knee-grazing sheaths and luxe overcoats. Wearing Prabal means Kate steps out into a different sartorial direction than her standard Easter-egg-florals and stately navy coatdresses (even if she is wearing the same round-toe black pumps, as always).

If it's a test drive for a new look, it works. We'd like to see some more of the gritty, smoky-eyeliner-worthy eveningwear on her, like the stuff below:

For a diplomatic dinner in a glossy, high speed city like Hong Kong or Dubai.
