NYFW Spring 2013: Elizabeth and James Relaxes

If anyone has experience with wearing slightly-too-large clothes, it's gotta be Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Back in their mini-mogul days—before The Row and Elizabeth and James, before the seamstresses on speed dial—they were five-foot-nothing teenagers swamped by standard size zeros. And I can personally attest I saw each of them wearing something unintentionally baggy on TRL or the Kids' Choice Awards more than once.

But now the girls aren't just tiny tycoons, they're fashion designers—CFDA award-winning ones at that—and for Spring 2013, they want their Elizabeth and James customer to embrace that slightly-too-large silhouette.  Instead of slim-fit tailoring, their spring collection was full of breezy pants and extra-long blazers that slouched just a bit at the shoulders. It looked both comfortable and luxurious, like something Bianca Jagger would wear at a fancy beachside restaurant in St. Tropez.

Of course, that could've just been the presentation's Beach Boys soundtrack humming in my ears, but the chunky bracelets, wispy hair and punches of bright, Delhi-looking silks didn't hurt that stylish nomad vibe either. (We'd of course wear it right here in the city, where choosing suiting that's not stovepipe skinny can act as the ultimate rebellious luxury.)
