NYFW Spring 2013: Joy Cioci's Lacy Bathing Bonnets

When it comes to accessories, most people tend to focus on bags, handbags and jewelry. Hats are often an afterthought and mainly worn for practical ear-warming or face-shading reasons.

But thanks in part to Marc Jacobs' furry toppers and the fascinators favored by Kate Middleton, hats are a thing again. Baseball caps, too, seem to be having a moment. No longer reserved for frat boys and balding Little League coaches, they've been turning up in tons of street style shots this season.

At the Joy Cioci presentation yesterday, I spotted the trend's newest incarnation: bathing bonnets. Inspired by synchronized swimmer attire, the lacy and printed pieces gave the collection's peplum-hemmed party dresses and digi-print rompers a flapper-esque look—fitting, considering the anticipation surrounding the impending release of Baz Luhrmann's Great Gasby re-make. I predict that between now and NYFW Spring 2014, we'll see hat lovers like Anna Dello Russo and Lady Gaga give them a test run. Will you, too?
