Celebrity DJs: Their Best Looks
Once upon a time, DJs were just those random dudes who spun tunes at your sister's Sweet 16. But recently, the job's been overtaken by well-dressed girls who, in addition to playing weekly or even nightly gigs at lounges and industry events, sit front-row at fashion shows and are BFFs with many of the artists whose songs they play.
From established style icons (hi, Alexa and Leigh!) to up-and-coming DJ darlings (what up, Hannah and Chelsea!), click through to meet some of our favorite ladies on the music-spinning scene—and shop their style, too. And while most of them rely on laptops rather than vinyl for their DJ duties, that doesn't stop them from getting inspired by past decades when it comes to their stellar wardrobes.
The Gigs: A Madewell campaign, past work with Emporio Armani and Rimmel London and a contract with Next Model Management. Oh, plus albums and near-nightly turntable jobs.
The Essentials: A bright blazer, crazy pants and bold stiletto sandals.
The Gigs: Where do we begin? Formerly a TV personality in the UK, Alexa—now repped by Next Model Management—is a Chanel ambassador and muse to countless other brands (Lacoste, Maje and Superga among them). Her two collaborative collections for Madewell flew off shelves, and she's got a Mulberry bag named after her.
The Essentials: Masculine/feminine loafers, a chambray button-up and—duh!—a Mulberry Alexa bag.
The Gigs: Was a founding member of girl band The Like, in which she played drums. Since then, she's modeled for Rachel Antonoff and Wren's famously fun lookbooks.
The Essentials: A statement handbag, saddle shoes and anything polka-dotted.
The Gigs: Remember The Misshapes? Leigh was a founding member of the NYC DJ outfit—and since then, she's snagged a contract with IMG and gone on to appear in campaigns for H&M, DKNY, the Gap, and many more. Like Alexa, Leigh's a Chanel brand ambassador.
The Essentials: An LBD (that's long black dress, in this case), razor-sharp black pumps and the darkest shade of Chanel nail lacquer on offer.
The Gigs: The Oakland, California native learned the tricks of the music-mixing trade from the late DJ AM and is BFF with Katy Perry—you might've caught her cameo in the singer's flick Part of Me earlier this year. She's a fixture on the fashion nightlife scene, and was even hired to DJ Chelsea Clinton's wedding.
The Essentials: A floral crown, ultra-bright skirt and graphic black-and-white button-up.
The Gigs: This NYU grad is now signed with Roc Nation—that'd be Jay-Z's music label, no big deal—and travels the world as an A-list DJ. As Dior's "in-house DJ," she's inspired one of the brand's makeup palettes. Currently signed with Elite Model Management, she's also done campaigns for DKNY and Uniqlo.
The Essentials: A (high-end!) bra top, Dior lip gloss and Charlotte Olympia platforms.
The Gigs: This British expat's starred in a Cole Haan campaign and played countless Fashion Week afterparties. Meanwhile, her color-chameleon hair (once purple, now bleached blonde with "statement roots") has tempted many to reach for their at-home dye kits.
The Essentials: A hippie-esque lace dress, flatforms and leather moto jacket.
The Gigs: This eco entrepreneur helps her brother Ben run Green Owl, a sustainable music-meets-fashion company. She generally DJs at smaller events and intimate New York hotspots, and has appeared in lookbooks and campaigns for the likes of Calypso St. Barth and Kaelen. Oh, and did we mention M.I.A. is her sister-in-law?
The Essentials: Printed pants, chunky-heeled sandals and something crocheted.
