Clea DuVall on Why Her Hair Looked So Damned Good in Argo
Argo is a great film, and the greatest thing about it may well be Clea DuVall's sexy, shiny, feathertastic brunette hairdo. And it looks so hot with her giant eyeglasses! I love it so much, I just had to talk to her about it.
Lucky: So, Argo is a masterpiece. And you were amazing as Cora Lijek, who spent 79 days with her husband and four other embassy employees at the Canadian ambassador’s house in Iran, escaping when the hostages were taken in 1979. That said, I just want to make sure everyone understands that the real star of the show was your hair.
Clea DuVall: Aw thanks. Pretty much every day someone would ask me if I was wearing a wig.
Because it was so awesome. You had a total nerd Farrah Fawcett thing going on. So, how did they do it?
Trish was my hair person and every morning–Oh, I’m the worst with hair terminology….
That’s ok. We like that.
Every morning, Trish would set it–is that what you say?–sometimes on hot rollers, sometimes just regular ones, and then I would go to makeup–[Argo Director] Ben [Affleck] wanted it to be pretty authentic, so I hardly wore any make up—and then she would just comb it out and blow it out, and then she would brush it into those flips. She also put a hot roller on my bangs so it wouldn’t go flat during the day.
Did Trish use a lot of hairspray?
Oh yes. There was lots of hairspray involved. Lots of hairspray.
So even though I thought your hair was really amazing in this, you just have beautiful hair. Tell me a little bit about your hair.
Well, it has turned a little bit wavy. It was stick straight when I was a kid. I happen to have had it long when I started this role, and I liked that, but I like a bob because it’s easier to maintain. I use Kiehl’s Amino Acid shampoo, and I put Kiehl’s Silk Groom on the ends before I dry my hair. I blow it out to straighten it a little bit, like if I’m going out.
Oh! What a good idea. Kiehl’s Silk Groom is a classic—the Casablanca of hair products. Still—I would have thought that would have made it too greasy.
That’s why I just put in on the ends.
I’m going to try that. So the whole movie—in addition to being edge-of-your-seat suspenseful as you wait to see if the crazy plan to have the American embassy employers pose as Canadian filmmakers to get them out of Iran works—just had this great feeling of '70s-ness. It was so real. I felt eight again. Your hair was simply the height of that miraculous achievement.
Yeah. Everything, the hair, the makeup, the clothes, the set design, was so spot on, I think it really helped us. Ben had us all live in the house we shot in before we started filming. We weren’t allowed to go outside, we weren’t allowed to talk to anyone. No cell phones, nothing modern. There were just '70s movies to watch, '70s magazines, '70s newspapers. I think that immersion helped us get oriented to that time period, especially since a lot of us were infants then.
Immersion! That’s how your hair looked so perfect. And your outfits were amazing. What was your favorite?
He didn’t say that specifically—but I will say that on the set, my hair did get a lot of attention.
Actually I think I might be you in Argo for Halloween. I have long brown hair. I think I can do it.
